MAKE A "RETREAT HOME" A FIVE-STAR ACCOMMODATION, III
There has been a dramatic increase in the second home market in recent years. Someone designing a second home should consider several aspects of the home that make it different than a person’s primary residence. In previous editions I have discussed details regarding practical design of a versatile second home. Following are additional concepts we feel should be considered in the design of any retreat home:
1. Outdoor living. Covered porches, screened porches, outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces: these are all important features that expand the enjoyment of a retreat home. Face as many interior rooms as possible to the primary outdoor living area, especially if a scenic view is available. Create several access points from the inside to the outside (i.e., French doors from bedrooms to porches). This gives occupants a measure of independence and convenience.
2. Material and Finishes. Nobody wants to spend their leisure time maintaining a home. Tile flooring, stained concrete flooring and wood-planked interior walls are some of the suggested materials we have encouraged our clients to select for a durable finish. Full masonry exteriors minimize painting. Metal roofing reduces maintenance. Xeriscape landscaping will minimize lawn upkeep and watering expenses.
3. Accessibility. We recommend designing homes that are more usable for elder guests as well as being more usable for our clients as they age. Incorporating “universal design” features into a home accomplishes this objective without creating an institutional look. At a minimum, widen hallways and doors, enlarge baths and eliminate steps at the main level.
These are common-sense features that will enhance any design and provide flexibility over the years for a family that is changing, growing and aging. Primarily a second home should be designed with fun in mind. Follow your heart, make it “the way you always wanted it,” try to be practical at the same time and you should be able to create a second home that will serve you and your family happily for many years.
