The clients desired to expand their ranch home compound to accommodate a growing family. They were intrigued by a barn-like structure that would compliment the existing residence but with a more recreational character. The clients also wanted extra sleeping accommodations and a craft room.
The Barn was positioned to create a sense of enclosure for the existing pool terrace. All structures - house, casita, outdoor kitchen and the new Barn, are positioned around the pool - the central focus to the compound.
The Barn design is organized around a large Common Room open to a porch overlooking the pool terrace. On three sides the Common Room is wrapped by a myriad of spaces - a sunroom sitting nook overlooking a southern lake, a steel silo housing a walk-in bar (first floor) and a playroom (second floor), a Game Room for billiards and shuffle board, a Craft Room, a spacious Guest Bedroom, and a second floor attic Bunkroom for three beautiful granddaughters.
Exterior materials include stone – a mix of sandstone and limestone – and cedar plank siding. Corrugated paint grip metal clads the Bunkroom dormer. The silo is galvanized steel. The roof is standing seam metal.
Interior materials include reclaimed pine flooring, reclaimed metal ceilings, cedar wall planking and tongue-and-groove ceiling finishes. Exposed trusses in the Common Room are composed of rough sawn fir members connected with steel plates.
